Every year we invite family and friends to our house for Thanksgiving.  This year (2010) I intend to create and serve an experiment in early American cookery.  The plan includes researching recipes and menus from the pre-1800 American Colonies.  I’ll be taking into consideration seasonal appropriateness, period preservation methods, what was imported during this period, and local sourcing. I plan on growing as much as my own produce as possible and preserving what needs to be kept for the feast. The menfolk have said that they’re up to the challenge of roasting the great bird over an open fire.

My disclaimer:  I’ve never done much experimenting in historic cooking. I’m not documenting this for anyone but myself, and maybe those who are curious, so being 100% authentic is NOT the goal.  The goal is to have fun and do something unique for my guests.

Keeping these things in mind I’ll will create a menu for our family and friends to enjoy together.  I hope that you enjoy this journey with me.
